Former PKR No2 Syed Husin Ali says the current president is more than capable to contest.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali said he saw no harm in party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s intention to contest in the upcoming national polls, adding that her decision to contest may just give the national opposition an edge.
The PKR senator said Wan Azizah, the wife of opposition and party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, was more than capable to run for elections given her experience.
“She has the capability, experience and ability, so why not utilise that?” he told reporters in Parliament here.
Yesterday the PKR president said she was mulling running for a state seat in the 13th general election due next April.
The former Permatang Pauh MP said she could still run in any state constituency even though she is barred from contesting at parliamentary level.
The law does not permit Wan Azizah to contest for a parliamentary seat after she voluntarily resigned as Permatang Pauh MP in August 2008 to pave the way for her husband’s return to active politics.
“Even though I have the choice to choose any constituency I wish to contest in, I still need to get feedback from supporters.
“The party is thinking of suitable places for me,” she was quoted by Sinar Harian as telling reporters in Penang after closing her party’s pre-electoral convention there last night.
Syed Husin said this, however, is ultimately up to the party’s leadership to decide on her candidacy.
It is believed that she is looking at contesting in Penang.
