A clean Umno need not smuggle cash

YOURSAY 'Nazri, isn't it an offence to smuggle in RM40 million? Why has no action been taken to prosecute Sabah Umno for this offence?'

Law minister sees no evil in RM40mil donation

your say1Malaysia2Agama: The issue is not just about laws. There are already enough laws to hang Umno Sabah. Suaram received funds from abroad using legitimate banking channels and BN said it was illegal.

Now this Michael Chia runner, with Singapore dollars instead of ringgit and under a surreptitious cloak-and-dagger operation, tried to smuggle the money into Malaysia. That is pure corruption.

De facto law minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, this is about ethics and not just laws. A clean Umno does not need to hand-carry RM40 million cash into the country.

HYL: If the RM40 million smuggled from Hong Kong is no issue, then why harp on the issue of where Suaram gets its money from?

Why also highlight that PKR allegedly gets contributions from billionaire George Soros? These should also be no issue. Please enlighten me, Nazri.

SIC it: There is nothing wrong with a political donation if it's done openly and legally. But when the money is smuggled into the country and the suspected culprit caught, questions will be asked.

Nazri, just tell us why the need to smuggle the money into Malaysia.

Anonymous #19098644: Why was the ‘contribution' not transferred by normal means, and is it recorded as a political donation in the official accounts and books of Umno? If not, it is money laundering, tax evasion and corruption.

Why would any organisation or person donate RM40 million, if not a corrupt payoff for contracts, favours, etc. Why are they taking monies from allegedly unknown, unidentified foreign sources?

It is not just suspicious, it is outright corruption by BN.

Anonymous_3e86: For a few hundred thousand ringgit, you had a few enforcement agencies going after Suaram. But for RM40 million, you say it is okay? To quote Mr Spock of Star Trek: "It's illogical!"

Anonymous #88605886: Six agencies were needed to probe Suaram after they had declared that their donations came from the Germans and others. And Nazri is saying for Umno's RM40 million, you don't need to answer for it? Malaysia Boleh.

Karma: Nazri, now everything is okay for you. But before this, your comrades had been crying foul on human rights NGO Suaram and news portal Malaysiakini for allegedly receiving foreign funds and an investigation launched against the former as though someone had been murdered.

Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was going all out to book Suaram within days, but it turned out to be a bluff. Now all your comrades are unusually quiet about Umno receiving foreign funds.

Muak: The RM40 million "political contribution" would be a different matter if it was for the opposition, isn't it?

The Umno-BN would have kicked up the mother of all ruckuses. But for a "political contribution" to Umno-BN, Nazri sees no evil. Right ... I was born yesterday it seems.

Fair Deal: Nazri, isn't it an offence to smuggle in RM40 million? Why has no action been taken to prosecute Sabah Umno for this offence?

Do you think people are that stupid to believe your explanation? If it is not an offence to receive donations from even unknown sources, why then did the BN government kick up such a big fuss when a certain NGO received a donation of less than half a million ringgit from friendly countries like Germany and US?

And all these were done properly through banks. Sorry to say, in my opinion, BN is corrupt to the core.

Starr: Nazri's justification on the RM40 million donation to Umno Sabah makes a mockery of the justice system and Prime Minister Najib Razak's GTP (Government Transformation Programme) to promote good governance and transparency in order to rid the country of corruption.

It seems that any criminal act done in the name of Umno is never wrong. Indeed, this is tantamount to state-sponsored corruption.

It also gives the impression that there's no difference between funds in state coffers and those of Umno. The government's explanation is not only nonsensical but also unconvincing. It smacks of a state cover-up for Sabah CM Musa Aman.

Joseph Lee: Did the money belong to timber trader Michael Chia or was he merely an agent for a foreign interest trying to buy a ‘puppet' Sabah government?

While political donation is legal, what if huge donations come with the condition that the Sabah chief minister must do the donor's bidding?

Sabahan: We all know the RM40 million is money from illegal timber dealings. That is one offence. Bringing that amount in cash into Malaysia is another offence.

No one donates to Umno. Umno is the one who hands out money for votes (not an offence in Malaysia according to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commissioin and the Election Commission).

At best, it is probably a bribe given to Musa for projects.

Onyourtoes: Nazri, who is to decide whether it is an offence or not, you? You are an interested party - an Umno member and a cabinet minister, how can you decide?

Just disclose who the ‘donors' or ‘contributors' are; explain why the need to transmit the money in hard cash; and why the need for a Chinese national to do the job.

Disclose where the money is now, and let the people decide whether it is a criminal offence, a morally wrong act, or a perfectly legitimate transaction.

Chipmunk: When opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim took a private jet to Sabah, the whole of Umno were screaming their heads off.
But RM40 million for Sabah Umno brought in as cold hard cash, that is okay. - Malaysiakini
