Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein plans to console Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam over the brickbats on the elaborate wedding of the latter’s son.
Speaking to reporters today, Hishammuddin said this is something to be expected as the elections are coming soon.
“In this election season, anything can be an issue... If a leader had thrown a banquet for his son’s wedding during a different period it would not have been an issue.
“I will meet with Datuk Seri Ali tomorrow. I want to tell him, don’t be disappointed as it is just the political season. We all understand,” he said.
“All our families had to go through this, including mine.”
Hishammuddin, who is also home minister, was asked if he felt the issue would affect Umno’s standing in Malacca.

Graft probe under way
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today revealedthat it is investigating Mohd Ali for alleged corruption involving the wedding, which attracted 130,000 and was recorded in the Malaysian Book of Records.
On Wednesday, PAS’ Mahfuz Omar cited a leaked document from the Malacca State Development Corporation (SDC) to inform the Dewan Rakyat that state agencies had “sponsored” the event.
The document, made available to media later, was the minutes of a meeting chaired by SDC chief executive Yusof Jantan to organise the wedding.
Among agencies involved were local councils, the Malaysian Armed Forces and the state cultural department, all of which committed to provide in-kind sponsorship.
Yusof gave his statement to the MACC on the matter this morning.
