'Mega kenduri' under spotlight for using state money

'Mega kenduri' under spotlight for using state money
Melaka chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam (pic), whose son's wedding made into the Malaysian Book of Records for the most number of guests - 130,000 people within eight hours - has now come under spotlight over a revelation that state agencies had paid for the ceremony.
PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar urged Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission to investigate Ali over abuse of power following the revelation of a document which showed Melaka State Development Corporation (PKNM) had sponsored the lavish feast.
The document, in the form of minutes of a meeting on August 27, 2012, details the government departments involved in sponsoring the feast held on September 30. According to the minutes, there was also a request that Ali should not be billed for the costs incurred for his son's wedding.
Works Department and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, said Mahfuz, had also been instructed to prepare sufficient generators on the day, while state water company Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad was tasked to prepare extra pipes and sinks.
Mahfuz said Ali’s special officer had admitted that the kenduri event was sponsored at RM10 per pax.
“Everything was free,” he added.
Melaka PAS commissioner Adly Zahari meanwhile urged Ali to come clean on the revelation.
Yesterday, Ali claimed that RM600,000 was spent on the wedding, arguing that it was therefore not 'lavish'.
“Not lavish? What was he comparing with? The engagement for prime minister’s daughter? If that's the case, then it was not that lavish yet," said Adly.
Earlier, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang estimated the cost to be higher, at RM100 per pax, leading to RM13mil for 130,000 guests on food alone.
KITA president and former minister Zaid Ibrahim meanwhile said UMNO should be proud of the feat.
“UMNO must be proud that they have a Malay leader who can bring 130,000 people for free makan,” he mocked.
