PANICKY Umno groups protest PR's plan for lawyers to brief Parliament on Scorpenes
KUALA LUMPUR -- Six non-governmental organisations (NGO) today urged the Home Ministry to investigate plans by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and three Pakatan Rakyat Members of Parliament to bring in foreigners to brief the Dewan Rakyat regarding the purchase of Scorpene submarines by the navy.
Young Journalists Club (KWMM) president Dzulkarnain Mohd Taib said this was necessary to determine the opposition's agenda in inviting three foreign lawyers to brief the Dewan Rakyat on court proceedings in France on the purchase.
Dzulkarnain also questioned the opposition's ability to fund their presence.
"These are professional lawyers who are paid by the hour. Who is sponsoring their transport costs from France and accommodation here, surely they will not stay in a three-star hotel," he told reporters after lodging a report at the Dang Wangi Police Headquarters this evening.
Besides KWMM, other NGOs which filed police reports regarding the same matter were the Malaysian Malay Network Organisation (JMM), Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa), Crime Prevention Awareness Board (LKPJ), Consumers Protection and Welfare Board (LPKPM) and Muslims Consumers Association Of Malaysia (PPIM).
On Oct 3, Pakatan Rakyat leaders Datuk Mahfuz Omar, R. Sivarasa and Tian Chua held a news conference at Parliament's lobby informing that Anwar had sent an invitation to lawyer William Bourdon and his colleagues Joseph Breham and Oliver Metzner to give a briefing at Dewan Rakyat on the matter.
