Penang to delay AES implementation

Penang to delay AES implementation
GEORGE TOWN - The Penang state government will delay the implementation of Automated Enforcement System (AES) in the state until a proper analysis be carried out.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government is viewing the implementation of AES with great concern while at the same time awaiting feedbacks from the state's two local councils.
"Our view is that we (state government) need more time to study it ... we do not want to rush implementing such system," he said at a press conference in Gurney Hotel today.
He said although both local councils in the state have given their views towards the implementation of AES, the final decision still lies with the state government.
His concern comes after it was reported that 39 AES cameras for speed traps and 18 for traffic lights would be set up in Penang soon under the proposal.
Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has since rejected the proposed AES as it would burden the people in the state as the design is not based on the traffic plans. However, the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) will decide in a meeting on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) president had since urged relevant authorities to immediately enforce the AES system to punish traffic offenders. He stressed that AES was urgent to nab those traffic light offenders to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.
AES involves the use of high-technology camera which would detect traffic offenders including those who beat the red traffic light and exceeded the speed limit. It was reported that 63,558 offenders were caught on camera since its first eight days of operation from Sept 23.
