REJECTED? Govt to ban PR's Nov 3 rally for clean polls - source
KUALA LUMPUR - The management of the Bukit Jalil National Stadium is expected to turn down Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) application to hold a mammoth gathering of 50,000 supporters there on Nov 3.
A source told theSun the Malaysian Stadium Corporation (MSC), which manages the stadium, cannot process or approve PR's application yet due to ongoing roofing repair works at the stadium.
This also applies to applications from all other event organisers, the source said.
The source told theSun today that it was not possible to hold any form of activity in the stadium as the construction works would endanger the public.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said: "The management recently received an application to hold the gathering from a PAS representative. However, it is not possible to accommodate the request or those from other organisers because of the current construction works here."
PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, also known as Mat Sabu, had on Wednesday announced at the Parliament lobby that PR plans to hold a mass gathering on Nov 3.
The gathering, themed "People's Uprising" calls upon the government to address the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections' (Bersih) eight core demands, which include a clean-up of the electoral roll and free and fair access to the media.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib said on Thursday that he would not oppose PR's plans should MSC agree to the coalition's application for the gathering to be held there.
When contacted, Mat Sabu said: "Yes, we understand that we must follow procedures to hold the gathering and we have made an application to the stadium, but have yet to receive any response from them.
"We are only following the prime minister's suggestion to host it there," he said.
It is understood that PR's representatives met several civil society groups on Friday at PAS's central headquarters to prepare for the gathering.
