GOMBAK- A former senator lost more than RM400,000 in valuables after the prayer area of his house in Jalan Berlian, Taman Perwira, here caught fire on Tuesday night.
The 9pm fire at MIC leader Datuk T. Murugiah’s home was believed to have been caused by a short circuit, a Fire and Rescue Department official said.
The official said that 12 men and 2 trucks were deployed to the three-storey bungalow house and the fire was put out by 10.40pm.
Meanwhile Murugiah said he and his family had gone to the airport to pick up his son who returned home from London, when he received news of the incident.
“My neighbours and security guards called me and informed me.
“But by the time I arrived back at the house, the fire had been put out,” he added.
The politician said that the fire had started from the ground floor of the home and had spread up to the second storey.
“All the furniture and electrical items and other things were destroyed as well,” he lamented.
He said that the family would be living elsewhere while repairs are done to the house.
