The government has defended against allegations that the chief executive officer (CEO) of Tabung Haji, touted to be a whopping RM85,000, is “above board and according to the system.”
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said the CEO’s salary was neither a figure simply applied at random nor was it “kept hidden.”
““The respective boards determined his pay, so this was not done at random and in a hidden manner. This is based on schedules and rules within Tabung Haji,” he said.
Jamil Khir, who is also Federal Territories Islamic Council (MAIWP) chairman, explained that Tabung Haji had followed the rules in deciding the pay scale, which were based on the individual’s professionalism, skill and current marker rate.
“I will address the issue of salary in Parliament. Tabung Haji is a company worth billions of ringgit; for five years in a row, Tabung Haji reaped profits exceeding one billion ringgit,” he told reporters after officiating a Baitulmal event at the MAIWP headquarters here today.
Last week, Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar, while debating Budget 2013 at the Dewan Rakyat, had disclosed that he was in possession of a December 2011 salary slip belonging to Tabung Haji’s CEO. He claimed the salary slip stated that the CEO, employed on a contract basis, earned RM85,000 and a year-end bonus of RM700,000.
Mahfuz had questioned how a CEO on contract can be given such a huge salary when CEOs of government-linked companies, who are permanent staff, do not enjoy such a huge salary, a package Mahfuz deemed was even bigger than Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s.
Jamil Khir, meanwhile, said the salary was fair given Tabung Haji’s achievements of having almost a million pilgrims-to-be on their books, while depositors amounted to a commendable 7.8 million people.
“There are many who choose to save with Tabung Haji, despite having the option of saving with a bank. We also manage Tabung Haji’s fund, which currently stands at RM7.8 million,” he said.
