LUMUT: The Automated Enforcement System (AES) has been effective in reducing the number of traffic offences, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.
He said in some areas where the system was implemented, the number of offences reduced drastically.
One or two areas have even started to record zero offences, he added.
The Road Transport Department has installed 14 cameras at various hotspots or accident prone areas in the Klang Valley and Perak since Sept 23.
In Pekan, JPJ deputy director Datuk Ismail Ahmad said there are plans to install another 831 AES over the next 18 months.
"The hotspots were identified based on the high number of accidents or traffic offences after a study carried out by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), JPJ, Public Works Department and police," he told reporters after closing a “Satu Komuniti Satu JPJ” programme here.
He added that 52 locations had been identified for the installation of the cameras. — Bernama
