'Democratic rights trigger vicious cycle of instability'
Exercising democratic rights to demonstrate and freedom of speech places society in a never-ending vicious cycle of instability and insecurity, says former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
This was because dissatisfied minorities that lose in elections would exercise these rights to undermine rightful governments, causing the downfall of these governments.
The groups that are felled, Mahathir said, would then exercise their rights to contest this and this cycle would cause greater insecurity to society as a whole, “ad finitum (with no end)”.
