Mahathir: PAS must apply 'hudud for all'
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad said hudud law must apply to non-Muslims out of fairness, in accordance with the tenets of Islam.
As such, said Mahathir, PAS must define how it intends to implement hudud law in Malaysia.
"I want to know if hudud law would apply to both Muslims and non-Muslims fairly as required by Islam.
"There are 43 verses in the Quran which says that punishment must be meted fairly and unfairness is against the teachings of Islam," he said, according to Bernama.
Mahathir said this when asked about PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's recent recognition of more Malays joining DAP, a staunchly secularist party, that rejects the implementation of hudud law.
"The punishment for theft on Muslims is amputation of the hand while for non-Muslims is a two-month jail term.
"This would be seen as unfairness and it is against the teaching of Islam," said Mahathir.
Mahathir was speaking to reporters after delivering his keynote speech at a function in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
