Prime minister Najib Razak has been urged to explain a dispute between Pahang and Terengganu over oil resources discovered recently at Block PM 307 Bertam off the Peninsula coast.
In October, Najib announced that the new oil field was discovered through a joint venture between Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and Swedish firm Lundin Oil.
Najib said his homestate Pahang would receive RM100 million annually once production begins in 2014 with a projected output of between 17,500 and 20,000 barrels daily.
However, Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said said Lundin had confirmed that Block PM 307 is within the state's territorial waters. But Petronas has yet to respond to the state government’s letter seeking clarification on the matter.
The contradicting statement prompted Pahang PAS commissioner Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to question whether Najib was lying or had been misinformed about the matter, adding that Najib should not play politics.
“His clarification will ease tensions between the two states which are claiming Bertam field as theirs,” he added.
Tuan Ibrahim also urged Pahang to take its own initiative to confirm the location of the Bertam oil field.
“If indeed it is in Pahang's waters, the state government must demand royalty payment from Petronas and Federal government as stipulated under the Petroleum Development Act 1974,” he said.
