SHAH ALAM, -- The culture of gangster politics has prevailed at political ceramah and campaigns because of the politics of hatred involving personal attacks.
Former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said political leaders should explain what was done by the government or political parties for the people and not carry out personal attacks which could create gangster politics.
In the past, the general elections were like fiestas, where the opposition and the government campaigned peacefully, but not any more now, he said at a discourse titled "Gangster Politics, Where Is Our Dignity?", hosted by Sinar Harian newspaper, here, Thursday.
Member of Parliament for Hulu Selangor P.Kamalanathan, Malaysian Institute of Integrity president Datuk Dr Mohd Tap Salleh and PAS central committee member Muhamed Hanipa Maidin also took part in the discourse which was moderated by Prof Datuk Mohamad Abu Bakar from Universiti Malaya.
Musa said nowadays, the general election campaigns were filled with incidents of throwing bottles and much more, and as such, political leaders must ensure their supporters were under control.
After the discourse, Musa told reporters that he would not be involved in any political party as he did not want to be stifled.
He said it was better that he be free to speak as it would be easier to give counsel and correct the situation.
Kamalanathan during the discourse said that leaders must control themselves and their supporters.
Political leaders should solve problems and not create them, he added.
