ALOR STAR- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today rapped the action of some bloggers in creating rumours of a racial clash in Sungai Petani on the internet.
He described it as very dangerous and extremely irresponsible.
"There is no such thing but they had deliberately created rumours about a massive racial clash in Sungai Petani.
"This is very dangerous and a very irresponsbile thing to do," he told reporters after attending a special meeting with Kedah civil servants at Universiti Utara Malaysia in Sintok, near here.
Present were Cuepacs president Datuk Omar Osman.
Muhyiddin, who is here on a day-long working visit, was asked on the postings of a racial clash, including killings and torching of a mosque on the social network over the past few days.
He said nobody should condone the actions of the irresponsible bloggers and rumour-mongers.
"The police have confirmed that none of what was posted in the internet was true.
"The people should not be unduly wary or afraid," he said.
Meanwhile, Kedah police chief Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said the police have detained 36 people to help them investigate the spreading of false news claiming there was a racial riot in the state.
He said the suspects, aged between 18 and 36, were being held at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters.
"More people would be roped in to facilitate our investigations.
"We will not compromise with anyone or groups which are out to create unrest and public disorder," he said.
