Student group throws a dare to SW1M chief

SAMM is organising a forum next week and it wants Sharifah to participate 'if she dares to face the public' and debate with KS Bawani.
KUALA LUMPUR: A student group has challenged Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M) president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen to debate with law student KS Bawani at an upcoming forum.
Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) said the forum would be organised in order to garner the views of both individuals.
“We are officially inviting Sharifah to attend this forum and if she wants to prove that she’s a learned person… she must come and defend herself,” SAMM leader Wan Noor Farel told a press conference here.
“We have provided a suitable venue and she has to attend… she must attend… if she dares to face the public,” he added.
Farel said this was an open challenge to Sharifah and SAAM would give her three days to respond to the invitation.
Kumpulan Aktivis Mahasiswa Independen (KAMI) vice-president Khalid Mohd Ismath explained that the purpose of the forum was not to “pick sides” nor was it a launchpad for the public to abuse Sharifah.
“We want to give Sharifah a chance to explain herself because we as the public have the right to know what was the message behind her arguments,” he said.
Khalid added that the forum was an open invitation to Bawani as well because the organisers want the discussion to be unbiased and neutral, with both sides presenting their points.
Meanwhile, SAMM senior director Nur Azizi noted that both Bawani and Sharifah had been ridiculed by various quarters.
“The two were berated in the online universe and this forum is the perfect platform for them to voice out their opinions and views to the public,” he said.
Expressing disappointment with Sharifah’s behaviour, International Islamic University’s (IIU) chairperson for academic and intellectual affairs Muhd Kamil Abdul Munim said: “This environment of thought-sharing and getting your point across has to be cultivated in universities itself… but Sharifah has clearly shown that it’s not the case.”
He shared SAMM’s fears that the situation that arose between the SW1M head and Bawani reflected the current situation in most universities and colleges.
“Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why the rankings of our universities have dropped significantly in the eyes of the world,” he said.
FMT understands that the forum entitled “Academic Freedom and Basic Human Rights” had been slated for Jan 22, 8pm, at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
