PETALING JAYA, Feb 26 – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim continued today his war of words with archrival Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, accusing him of hypocrisy after he claimed nepotism and cronyism will rule the Cabinet should the opposition leader be made prime minister.
Yesterday the former prime minister alleged Anwar (picture) would give key government posts to his family members should he assume power, pointing out that his wife is now the president of PKR, his daughter the vice-president and his closest ally is the deputy president.
The warning came within hours of the opposition leader unveiling the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) pact’s manifesto for Election 2013.
Anwar in retaliation said that under Barisan Nasional (BN) rule, however, nepotism is rampant and blatant, citing as example how Dr Mahathir’s children had also benefited from this system thanks to the clout he wields as the country’s most influential prime minister.
“Even his son is in Umno,” Anwar told reporters here, referring to Dr Mahathir’s son Mukhriz who is the current Deputy International Trade Minister and also tipped to be made Kedah mentri besar should Barisan Nasional (BN) regain Kedah.
“Under the Umno government, the elite and their children control oil and liquor companies,” added the PKR de facto leader, this time alluding to his rival’s eldest son Mirzan, who was once a one-time board member on Manila-based corporate giant San Miguel Corp and currently in oil company Petron.
