Detainee's mother wants Suhakam to speak up

The mother of detainee Muhammad Hilmi Hashim today submitted a memorandum to the Human Rights Commission Malaysia on her son who is being held under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, (Sosma).

Rahamah Abdul Majid, is asking Suhakam to state its official stand on Hilmi's detention, and on the detention of former Internal Security Act detainee Yazid Sufaat and religious teacher Halimah Hussein.

She said their detention is against human rights.

Accompanying her in submitting the memorandum were Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) coordinator, Ahmad Syukri Abd Razab, and Hulu Kelang assemblyperson, Saari Sungib, who is a former ISA detainee.

NONERahamah also asked Suhakam to issue suggestions or guidelines to the government regarding Sosma.
She also wants it to study if the new law is in line with human rights or violates the federal constitution.

Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam (left) gave his commitment to study Rahamah's requests.

"We will discuss it among ourselves and also meet with the authorities to get a better understanding," he added.
Three days ago, Rahamah filed a habeas corpus application to secure Hilmi's release. He has been detained since Feb 7.

In a related development, Hilmi was produced to the Ampang magistrates court on a charge of abetting Yazid in promoting terrorist acts in Syria.

Yazid and Halimah were reported to have claimed trial to the charge.
