Manuel Karingal Amalilio, the fugitive wanted by Philippine authorities, was sentenced to two years' jail for having an unauthorised passport, after a trial held in the ward of Queen Elizabeth 1 Hospital in Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
Also known as Mohammad Kamal bin Sa'aid, the 47-year-old businessman pleaded guilty to having a Philippine passport under the name Amililio Manuel Karingal without lawful authority, according to a New Straits Times report.
He was admitted to the hospital due to a liver problem on Saturday and the trial heard by magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof was held in the hospital ward.
He was represented by Khairul Othman.
The English daily reported that according to the facts given by prosecuting officer Azwal Azman, police arrested Amalilio on Jan 25 at 5.30pm at the departure gate of Kota Kinabalu International Airport Terminal 2.
Contrary to what the Philippine authorities claimed, investigations by the Malaysian police revealed that he was a Malaysian, but had obtained a Philippines' passport without lawful authority.
Amalilio fled to Sabah after being wanted by the Philippine police for cheating over 15,000 people of 12 billion pesos (RM895 million) through his company Aman Futures Group in the Visayas and Mindanao.

'He is Filipino'
Earlier on, Philippine Interior Secretary Mar Roxas claimed that documents gathered by Philippine enforcement agencies, including Amalilio's birth certificate and his Philippine passport, prove that he is a Filipino citizen.
Roxas (right) also alleged that Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman has blockedthe repatriation of Amalilio while Philippine President Benigno S Aquino III vowed to bring Amalilio back to the republic to face the law.
According to Filipino media, Sabah police stopped the deportation of Amalilio on Jan 24 just 10 minutes before he was about to board a plane to Manila with agents from the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation and the four agents were not given a clear and acceptable reason for the last-minute intervention.
Musa later admitted that Amalilio is a "distant relative" but denied that he had interfered in the repatriation.
Although Musa did not elaborate, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim told a Philippine daily that Amalilio's mother is Musa's first cousin.
"The mother is Zubaidah Omar, cousin of Musa. Aman (Musa's father) and Omar (Zubaidah's father) are brothers," he was quoted as saying by The Philippine Star.
Anwar also pointed out to the daily that Malaysian foreign minister Anifah Aman is the younger brother of Musa, and the brothers are related to Malaysia's Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail, who also hails from Sabah.
In another development, Sabah police chief Hamza Taib (right) clarified that the intervention came from him as the deportation did not follow procedures under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 2002.
According to a China Press report, Hamza explained that the Philippine authorities must apply for deportation through its attorney-general and the application should be submitted by the Philippine Foreign Ministry to the Malaysian Foreign Ministry before it is forwarded to the Malaysian police.
