Malaysia is almost bankrupt: Anwar's claim a slander - Muhyiddin

M'sia is almost bankrupt: Anwar's claim a slander - Muhyiddin
SUNGAI SIPUT - The claim by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Malaysia is almost bankrupt is a slander, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
On the other hand, he said, the country had vast resources and substantial revenue.
"Anwar said the Barisan Nasional (BN) is almost bankrupt. I want to ask the government servants who are present here whether they receive their salary. Are there village heads who have not received their allowances?
"He goes all over the world talking about cruelty, oppression, lack of protection, the people being neglected and that all races are living in hardship. This is a big lie," he told reporters after addressing the 1Malaysia People's Assembly at the Sungai Siput Kemas Activity Centre, here today.
He said the country's accumulated reserves were far bigger compared to other nations.
"Last year, the Prime Minister informed us at the cabinet meeting that for the first time in history, income tax had not been raised but the tax collection had reached RM125 billion," he said. He said that the tax collection had been distributed in the form of aid given to the people.
Muhyiddin said that in efforts to ease the burden of the people, the government had provided more than 200 1Malaysia products including the 1Malaysia People's Shop (KR1M), 1Malaysia People's Menu and 1Malaysia People's Clinic.
"The government provided all these aid to reduce the cost of living so that the people would not be burdened with such a problem. If that is the case, is it correct for Anwar to say that our government is bankrupt, that our government can no longer afford (to provide such aid)?" he asked.
He said the assistance provided by the government showed that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government could afford to look after the welfare of the people or rakyat.
"We urge the rakyat to give their mandate to the (BN) government in the coming general election so that our country can continue to enjoy peace and the people can live in comfort," he added.
