PAS told to rein in its Kota Damansara candidate

SELANGOR PAS may have given way to PKR to contest the Kota Damansara, Selangor state seat, but a certain PAS group on the ground is still campaigning.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) chief Mohd Nasir Hashim, who is contesting under PKR’s ticket, said the matter needs to be resolved quickly as polling day is approaching.

Dr nasir hashim, psm chairperson - Socialism 2010“Instructions have already been given by (PAS’) top leadership that PKR will contest this seat and PAS should support it.

“But there's a group here defying those orders, I don't know why,” Nasir toldMalaysiakini when contacted today.

“I have communicated this matter to PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali via a text message and he has taken note.

“I just hope they could resolve this matter as soon as possible because time is running out,” he said.

“As it is, both PKR and PAS logos will be on the ballot paper anyway. I consider this to be an internal matter between PAS’ top leadership and the PAS (division) here.”

Nasir had initially wanted to recontest his seat under PSM’s banner after the party was officially registered after the 2008 general election.

In that campaign, PSM candidates had used PKR’s ticket to campaign and PKR had initially insisted on the same arrangement in this contest.

PSM eventually gave in to PKR over the matter but soon faced another complication when PAS fielded its own candidate on nomination day.

On Saturday, PAS finally backed down on the three-cornered fight to allow Nasir to tackle BN in a straight fight.

‘PAS must avoid being spoiler’

When asked if PAS is helping him campaign as promised, he acknowledged that they are except for the small group.

“Yes, we do have friends (in PAS), many of them who have followed the top leadership's instructions.

“But there is a small group here who still wants to contest. It would be sad if we lose the seat because of this, because in this sense, PAS is being the spoiler.

“I just hope this is resolved soon because we are all friends, and I am the incumbent here and we have to defend this seat together. We have to ensure victory here by working together,” said Nasir.

Meanwhile according to a Sinar Harian report today, the PAS Kota Damansara candidate Ridzuan Ismail was reported saying he is still in the contest as far as Subang PAS division was concerned.

“We will carry on our work and hope the voters will give PAS the made to represent them in the election this time,” he was reported saying.
PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan said PAS members should stop campaigning for Ridzuan in Kota Damansara so as not to confuse the voters.

“In Kota Damansara, the statement by Mustafa Ali (to give way) is lauded.

“However, we still find the PAS candidate carrying out his campaign there and has not withdrawn, and this would raise confusion amongst the voters,” he said in a statement today.

‘Semenyih PKR should see bigger picture’

According to the statement, Arutchelvan held a press conference in Semenyih this morning, where he is contesting under PSM’s own ticket, urging the PKR candidate there to give way and fight for a common Pakatan win.

NONE“The 13th general eleciton is critical. This election will determine whether the change that the people are waiting for will be achieved or not.

“Therefore it is no longer a case of Pakatan Rakyat vs. Barisan Nasional, but of Barisan Rakyat against BN,” said Arutchelvan.

He called on PKR’s candidate Serdang PKR chief Hamidi Hassan to give way just as PAS has done so in Kota Damansara, to ensure a straight fight with BN in the polls on Sunday.

“At the very least, (Hamidi’s withdrawal) will make things clearer for the voters and guarantee a win for Pakatan,” he said.
The PSM sec-gen last week signed a pledge that he would support Pakatan Rakyat and not join BN should he win the seat, saying the pledge was legally binding.
