Violent clashes over Gelang Patah: DAP lodges police report against Dr M
DAP strongly urges the Police to conduct an immediate investigation into Dr. Mahathir’s “Gelang Patah” blog post before nominations day in order to send a strong & unequivocal statement that the politics of race baiting and the incitement of fear will not be tolerated during the 13th GE campaign.
A police report was made earlier this morning, 14th April, 2013, by Lim Lip Eng in his capacity as a member of the DAP Legal Bureau against Tun Dr Mahathir for his blog post entitled “Gelang Patah”. [Dr M warns of possible violent clashes if Kit Siang wins Gelang Patah]
The Police Report was made on the basis that (i) the allegations in this article was baseless and are of a defamatory nature against DAP parliamentary leader, Lim Kit Siang (ii) the article was written with ill intentions for the purpose of inciting the feelings of hatred and ill-will among the different races in Malaysia (iii) the police should investigate the writer of this article, Tun Dr. Mahathir, under Section 499 of the Penal Code, the 1948 Sedition Act and other appropriate laws which may have been broken.
We urge the police to undertake an immediate investigation into Dr. Mahathir’s blog post before nominations day on the 20th of April, 2013, in order to send a strong & unequivocal statement that the politics of race baiting and the incitement of fear will not be tolerated during the 13th GE campaign.
Deafening silence from Najib
If the police do not take any action, this will send a message to would be candidates that remarks which are hateful and seditious will be allowed during the 13th GE campaign. By giving tacit approval to this kind of behavior, the police will inevitably have created the conditions for the wanton incitement of fear and hatred to occur during the campaign period.
We echo the thoughts of Lim Kit Siang, that Dr. Mahathir’s recent antics, highlighted by his “Gelang Patah” blog post, is totally unacceptable and unbecoming for a former Prime Minister and the supposed statesman that he is.
Furthermore, we call upon Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to immediately and irrevocably condemned the statements made by Dr. Mahathir in his blog post and to distance himself from this kind of fear inciting messages during the general election campaign. If not, Najib would have proven once again that his “1 Malaysia” slogan is nothing but empty words and nothing more than a sound bite without any substance or sincerity.
Lim Lip Eng, Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Tiew Wey Kheng
