Blackouts in Tawau despite new RM80 mil station

TAWAU: A new RM80 million power station here appears to be either deficient or the power company managing it is inefficient, at least based on consumer complaints.
The Kubota Power Station that was built to cope with electricity demand has had little effect on ending disruptions in this east coast district of Sabah months after it came on-line
Sri Tanjung assemblyman Chan Foong Khin said parts of the district are still experiencing blackouts despite the power station being commission in Jan 7 this year to increase and help consolidate the existing electricity capacity in the district to 128MW.
Chan said former Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Peter Chin Fah Kui in December last year had assured there would be no more blackouts in Tawau as the new power station would be able to cope with demand.
“I was made to understand through all the statements made by either the government officials, TNB and SESB that the Kubota Power Station is especially for Tawau and once operating there would be no more blackouts for Tawau.
“But (in) the past few days, I received complaints from various parts of Tawau especially residential areas that they are experiencing hours of blackouts without getting any statements in the media as to what is happening,” he said yesterday.
“Is this what the government, TNB and SESB calls improving its capability and electricity supply?
“The SESB director must explain to consumers what is happening to the standby Kubota Power Station. Why is it not doing its job to provide the much needed supply?” he asked.
Chan said he understood there has been a lot of theft lately at SESB transformers, but questioned why the power company was keeping consumers in the dark about what was happening.
“I am not pointing fingers here … I’m only doing my job as people have complained to me. So please shed some lights here, why is the blackouts still happening after spending RM80 million to improve Tawau electricity supply?” he asked.
