Claims of polls irregularity in Sandakan

DAP claimed that policemen voting in early polls were asked to list down their service numbers.
By Cyril Lim
SANDAKAN: The DAP here has claimed that election offences were committed in the early voting exercise at two polling centres on Tuesday.
DAP election campaign legal adviser Chen Kok On disclosed this in a press conference yesterday saying that the secrecy of some ballots had been compromised after rank and file policemen were asked to record some details on a separate piece of paper before being given their ballots.
Policemen, he said, were told to write down some details like their service number on an attendance list (Informasi Kehadiran Pengundi Awal Polis) before they received their ballot paper and voted.
Chen said this was irregular as it made it easy to determine which candidate the policemen voted for if they checked the attendance list against the serial number on the ballot paper and was against election rules.
As soon as he pointed this out, a senior police officer tore up the list, he said.
“We have gathered evidences from the two locations and will be going to the police station to lodge a police report after this press conference,” Chen said.
Meanwhile Sandakan DAP parliamentary liaison chairman Wong Tien Fatt called on the Election Commission to ensure the process of the May 5 election is clean and fair following the discovery of the incidents which had allegedly breached election rules.
He urged voters to be aware of their rights as citizens and not to be pressured into doing what they knew was in violation of the laws.
“Do not be intimidated by any quarters in your course of exercising your right as a Malaysian citizen to vote in the general election,” said Wong.
Present at the press conference were Poon Ming Fung (DAP-Tanjung Papat), Hiew Vun Zin (DAP-Elopura), Chong Ket Kiun (DAP-Karamunting), Hamzah Abdullah (PAS-Batu Sapi), Musa Ghani (PKR-Sekong) and Serman Hassnar (PKR-Libaran).
