Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former Malaysia's PM, and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah, were yesterday hosted to lunch at a new restaurant in Dorsett Hotel.
The irony is that they didn't feast on 'rich man' dishes touted by PappaSan, an upmarket version of PappaMia launched by owner Mr David Chew, who hails from Ipoh.
Instead the VIP couple dined on North Indian fare cooked by Delhi Restaurant, which is part of Mr Chew's food and beverage group. It was Mr Chew who recommended their lunch menu.

They nibbled on Vegetable Pakoras, Papadom crackers with Raita sauce before moving on to Lobster Maharaja (above) and heavier dishes like Butter Chicken, Tandoor Naan, Mixed Grill Sizzler, Mutton Biryani. Palak Paneer and Gobhi Manchurian.
So which dish did Dr M like?
Apparently all of them. He seemed to enjoy his lunch with relish, said a member of the hosting group which includes key staff from PappaMia group and the hotel.
Dr Mahathir was in Singapore to give a keynote address at an event. Although he had officially stepped down from politics, the former prime minister apparently still wield considerable influence in Malaysian politics.

The recent bitterly fought general election saw his return to help UMNO in its campaigning and his personal wish to see that prime minister Seri Najib triumphs. And he did.
Mr Chew chose the lunch venue as he wanted to show Dr M and Dr Hasmah his latest restaurant concept at PappaSan, which he might take to other countries.
Housed on level 1 of recently opened Dorsett Hotel in New Bridge Road, the spacious restaurant is decked out with contemporary but warm designs, solid wood furniture, onyx counters and a huge oil painting of a Chinese lady that enlivens a wall with a Chinatown theme.
The restaurant also boasts a private dining room adorned with paintings on pounding horses by Chinese artist Qi Hong. The restaurant presented one of his paintings to Dr M yesterday.

The menu at PappaSan includes PappaMia's signature chicken rice by group chef Han (formerly from Meritus Mandarin) and a 'rich man' section, reflecting the clan and trade associations for Chinese towkays in the neighbourhood.
So humble fare like Char Kway Teow, Mee Sua, Chicken Porridge and Fried Rice become sumptuous with the addition of upscale ingredients like scallops, lobsters and abalone.

Improved Chicken Rice recipe by famous Chef Han, formerly of Meritus Mandarin, uses chickens raised without growth hormones.
Fish lovers will adore the whole, farm-fresh mullet baked in salt and flambeed at the table. Burger fans will happily sink their teeth into the hefty Wagyu Burger with Red Wine sauce.
