Ink not so indelible after all

A reader told FMT that he washed away the indelible ink on his finger by using toothpaste.
KUALA LUMPUR: A reader today told FMT that he managed to wash away the indelible ink put on his finger by voting officers this morning just after one hour upon casting his votes.
“All I did was to wash my finger with toothpaste. Although there are small signs of ink around my fingernail, by large, I managed to remove the ink,” he said.
He also provided FMT with a photo of his ink-free finger.
Just like this reader, there are other voters who have taken to the social media to state that they too have successfully removed the ink from their fingers.
The indelible ink is introduced for this election by the Election Commission to fight the menace of phantom voters. According to the EC, the ink will remain on the finger for five days.
The fiasco over the ink being easily removed first arose after the early voters casted their votes on April 30. Some of the early voters had complained that they could remove the ink using disinfectant, spirit, vinegar or hand sanitizer.
The EC had then defended itself by blaming polling officers for not shaking the ink bottles properly before applying them to the voters.
The EC said its polling officers would be reminded again to shake the ink bottles properly before applying the ink on voters today.
However events today once again show that something seems to be wrong with the ink process at polling centres.
The fear is that the easy manner in which the indelible ink can be washed away would make it easy for phantom voters to cast the votes today.
EC has not responded to the fresh cases of ink being washed away.
