JAKIM project upsets nature lovers

A forest in Bukit Seputeh is being cleared to make way for a shelter for HIV and AIDS victims.
PETALING JAYA: The clearing of a large expanse of forest in Bukit Seputeh has alarmed residents of the surrounding area.
Sylvan Ong, a resident of the Le Chateau Condominium, recently alerted FMT to construction activity in the area and expressed his concern for the survival of flora and fauna there. He claimed to speak for his neighbourhood.
Signboards at the site reveal that the Public Works Department is constructing facilities for a project undertaken by the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM).
According to JAKIM’s Deputy Director of Development, Mohd Adam Mohd Yazid, the land is being cleared to make way for a shelter for victims of HIV and AIDS. It is called Ilaj Home.
“Ilaj Home is a signature project of JAKIM, where a seven-storey shelter home is constructed to cater to approximately 100 residents,” he said.
Construction started last month and is expected to be completed in October next year.
Ong said the Bukit Seputeh forest is home to more than 200 species of birds as well as several species of land bound wildlife.
He said the forest was also host to a wide range of wild flowers, including pitcher plants, ant-house plants, bladderworts and sundews.
The residents feared that they would soon lose “the luxury of tracking and exploring” the forest, he added.
