'RM100k offer to buy off DAP campaigners in Labis'

DAP's Labis parliamentary candidate S Ramakrishnan today claimed several of his election machinery core staff had been offered up to RM100,000 to sabotage his campaign.

"My campaign staff received several calls from private numbers asking them not to help me.

"They said you don't need to join MIC or IPF (Indian Progressive Front), just create a NGO and we can help you in anyway you want," Ramakrishnan told a press conference in Labis, Johor today.

NONEHe added that there had been three such incidences, and two of those who received the offers reported the matter to the Tenang police station this morning.

One of them, N Genash (left), said the first call he handled was on Apr 29 offering him RM50,000 with the amount raised to RM70,000 and later RM100,000.

"It was from a Chinese man who did not identify himself, he asked me to stop working for Ramakrishnan.

"He called me 13 times and the last time was on May 1 when he asked me to meet with some BN people.

"I told them even if they killed me I will remain with DAP," said Genash, the former Labis IPF Youth chief.

'My staff in fear'

Ramakrishnan said one more staff received calls from a Tamil-speaking person offering unspecified "help" in exchange for abandoning his campaign.

"He said he could not sleep because received many calls in the middle of the night; it's a small town, so people are afraid.

"I had to convince him several times before he was willing to lodge a police report," said Ramakrishnan, who was quick to add that they were only offers with no threats.

He added that a third member of his staff had responded by demanding RM1 million, effectively putting an end to such calls.
Low ranking staff have also been offered money not to distribute or put up DAP campaign materials, he said.

NONE"I suspect that perhaps one or two of my team members may have been bought.
.
"It's not just me but others have seen changes in their behaviour and the way they work," he said.

Ramakrishnan (left) said all those targeted were members of his machinery, leading him to suspect that it is an attempt to cripple his campaign in Indian areas.

The parliamentary constituency of Labis has the highest Indian population in Johor, at 15 percent and is key to winning the constituency.

Describing this as gutter politics, Ramakrishnan said his team will lodge a complaint with the Election Commission later today.

"I hope the EC will buck up, look into what is happening on the ground and issue a stern warning.

"This is clear prove of how BN is using money politics to cripple their opponent's machinery," he said.
'MCA wants proof'

However, Ramakrishnan said his machinery is still functioning and believes he can give his BN rival, Chua Tee Yong, a good run for his money.

NONEMeanwhile, at another press conference later, Chua (right) called on Ramakrishnan to reveal who the perpetrator is, if the claim is truly valid.

"DAP has a lot of fabrication and this claim comes at the same time as (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng is speaking against money politics.

"Could this be a show for DAP candidates to push for sympathy votes at the last minute?" he said.
