‘RM80 mil talk all rubbish’

SAPP deputy chairman Amde Sidek is hoping the surge for change will help him win the Sindumin state seat.
SIPITANG: In Sipitang, which is believed to be a Barisan Nasional stronghold, the mood for change is as prevalent as it is in the rest of the state.
There Amde Sidik, the slight, studious looking but tireless SAPP candidate for the Sindumin state seat is on the road with Kamis Daming, the party’s parliamentary candidate for Sipitang.
They have been traversing this large and logistically difficult constituency to get their message of change across.
Though his local opposition party SAPP – standing on a platform of Sabah for Sabahans – has been bombarded by negative comments and allegations of having received RM80 million from the ruling coalition to ‘split’ the opposition vote, both Amde and Kamis are also quietly confident that an upset is in the making in Sabah.
Amde himself brushed aside the allegation of RM80 million having been paid to SAPP as “rubbish”.
“Look at me. I just have RM80 in my pocket,” he says taking out his wallet. “You think if we had RM80 million Kamis and I would be campaigning like this on our own?
“I would have hired a team and held large ceramahs. We are going directly to individuals to get our message across.
“This is more effective … a personal touch as we want to explain to the people what they have lost all these years under BN.
“Just distributing money for votes like the BN,” he says, pausing for a quick look over his shoulder as though to see who may be listening, “that is not our style. That is not my style. We want a clean and fair election.”
