Soi Lek says will not defend MCA presidency

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — After leading the MCA to its worst-ever electoral performance last night, party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek announced today that he will not seek re-election in this year’s party election.
The former Cabinet minister, whose political career has seen him float in and out of the party at least twice, is just completing his first term as MCA president, a post he wrested from Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat during a fractious power struggle in 2010.
In a statement here, the veteran politician acknowledged the MCA’s poor showing last night but reaffirmed his party’s earlier resolve that none of its leaders would accept any government posts, whether at state or federal level.
“MCA respects and accepts the decision of the voters. This is what democracy is all about,” Dr Chua(picture) said.
Last night’s tumultuous polls saw the near-obliteration of the MCA, with the party winning only seven parliamentary and 11 state seats out of the 37 parliamentary and 90 state seats it contested nationwide.
The embarrassing defeat saw the second largest component party in Barisan Nasional (BN) lose more than 50 per cent of the 15 federal seats in won in Election 2008, and forcing it to stick to the unanimous decision it made in 2010 to reject government posts if it fares even worse this time.
MORE TO COME
