Detainee claims cops tortured him

G Kallyana Sundram files a police report claiming that he was tortured after being arrested.
SEREMBAN: G Kallyana Sundram, 31, claims that he was tortured by the police after being detained over suspicion of being involved in a robbery case.
The victim, who hails from Ipoh, filed a report with the Seremban district police headquarters here today.
His lawyer, S Karthigesan said Kallyana Sundram was arrested at the Oakland Commercial Centre here on Feb 4 when he was visiting a friend.
“The policemen who arrested him had beat him and stepped on his head, causing his ear to bleed. He was then taken to the Nilai police headquarters for questioning.
“On the third day he was quizzed in the interrogation room and was hands were cuffed behind his back. He was asked to sit. The policemen then stepped on his legs.
“Another policemen then hit the soles of feet with a rubber hose, until they swelled and bled. After this, he was ordered to jump repeatedly, during which he was hit on the head with the rubber house,” he added.
According to Kartighesan, after having spent six days in the lock up, his client suffered from severe gastiritis.
“He was not sent to the hospital but was given pills, bread and mineral water. The next day he was interrogated again, this time he was kicked in the stomach.
“Kallyana Sundram was kept in the police lock-up for 25 days… He was sent to Penang for investigation as well. He was charged in the Seremban Sessions court only on March 1,” he added.
Karthighesan called on the police to investigate those who were responsible for torturing Kallyana Sundram.
Also present was Kallyana Sundram’s mother V Vijayaletchumy, 51 and Negeri Sembilan Hindraf chief S Sivakumar.
The police have landed in the spotlight following the recent spate of custodial death cases, prompting several quarters to call for the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
