Don: PM Najib will survive no-confidence vote

Any attempts to pass a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the Dewan Rakyat will most likely be defeated, noted a political scientist.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)'s political science lecturer Prof Dr Shamsul Adabi Mamat told Sinar Harian that Najib wields superior influence among BN MPs, thus making such a motion nearly impossible to pass.

NONE"I believe with Najib's influence, it is not easy to get his position," he said.

He was responding to a Malaysian Insider report on June 13 claiming that Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (in dark suit) was meeting BN and Pakatan Rakyat MPs to support his bid to be the country's seventh prime minister.

The report, quoting only anonymous sources, said that Tengku Razaleigh was exploring the possibility of engineering a motion of no-confidence against Najib.

However, Shamsul Adabi believed that if Tengku Razaleigh was indeed keen on challenging Najib, he would do it through the Umno's internal election, scheduled for October.

"(Tengku Razaleigh might) want to contest the election of the party president. If he wins, he will be the prime minister.

"There is nothing wrong in him doing so. It is not treachery but a healthy democratic change in Umno itself," he said.
Thus far, those from Tengku Razaleigh's camp has yet to official respond to such news reports.
In recent weeks, several Umno leaders have publicly expressed that the top two post in Umno should not be contested. Among those who have said so are Shahidan Kassim, Abdul Rahim Bakri and Negeri Sembilan Umno.

However, there are those such as Pahang Umno chief Adnan Yaakob and former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad who disagreed.
