Dong Zong wants 'pow-wow' on Kuantan school

Dong Zong wants 'pow-wow' on Kuantan school
DONG ZONG (United Chinese School Committees Association) plans to call for a meeting of all Chinese organisations to brief them on the SM Chong Hwa Kuantan controversy, the Chinese press reported today.
The school, which was approved in July last year, has divided Chinese educationists over its status.
The pro tem school board of Chong Hwa, which was given the green light to build the school after campaigning for over two decades for a Chinese independent school in Pahang, has insisted that it is a Chinese school which will follow the system practised by the Kuala Lumpur Chong Hwa Independent High School.
However, Dong Zong has deemed it a "mutant" school because the approval letter stated that the school has to use Bahasa Malaysia to teach lessons based on the national school curriculum, and that its students must sit for public school examinations.
Dong Zong insisted the approval letter be amended before the school's students are allowed to sit for the UEC examination, an action that has also antagonised Hua Zong (Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia) and Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association).
At its meeting with Dong Lians (state-level Chinese school committees associations) in Kuching on Sunday, Dong Zong said it will set up a special task force enlighten the public on the Kuantan school issue.
Dong Zong chief Yap Sin Tian said a meeting with all Chinese groups is necessary to clear the air lest the Dong Zong might be mistaken for being heavy-handed in handling the issue.
At the meeting, Dong Zong and Dong Lians also made a joint appeal to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to fulfil a promise he made on April 1 to grant full recognition to UEC.
