Don't destroy the nation, Agong tells MPs

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah has reminded MPs to "not do anything that would destroy the nation".

Reiterating his call for everyone to accept the 13th general election results, Tuanku Halim called for undivided loyalty to the country from the MPs during his royal address at the new Parliament sitting today.

"Don't do anything that can destroy the country. A country that is destroyed by turmoil or suffers from economic downfall is uncertain to recover again within a short period," Tuanku Halim said.

"I urge all MPs to close ranks to develop the nation," he stressed.

NONETuanku Halim (left in photo) said that he believes in the government's commitment to fulfill its transformation agenda through the National Key Results Area (NKRA) and National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) programmes.

"I urge all parties to accept and respect the election results which had been held according to democratic practises."

He also praised the Election Commission (EC) and members of the civil service for ensuring that the election "took place smoothly".

In his 40-minute speech while officiating the lower house sitting yesterday, Tuanku Halim also said that "public peace and national security is still the government's priority".

"The government will also continue to work to reduce the gap between the perception and the reality regarding the safety level in this country," he said.

Tuanku Halim praised the progress that Malaysia has made since his first rule as Yang di-Pertuan Agong between 1970 to 1975.

"I have witnessed the country's development moving progressively.

"Malaysia has changed to become a modern industrial nation and is now heading to become a developed nation with a high income, while prioritising the rakyat's welfare," he added.
