MIC threatens boycott over Perak speaker post

MIC has threatened not to accept any Perak government positions unless the party is given the position of state assembly speaker, that it argues should go to an Indian.

NONEIn a statement today, party president G Palanivel said following the 12th general election, the post was held by an Indian both before and after BN’s 2009 takeover of the state.

“Now we have been deprived of the position. The Perak menteri besar should give us back the post.

“Otherwise MIC will remain BN friendly in Perak but will not take any positions including councillors as a sign of protest,” he said.

The Cameron Highlands MP added that the party will convene a central committee meeting on June 18 at the party’s headquarter to discuss this and party-election related issues.

The post was previously held by DAP’s V Sivakumar following the 2008 general election, and by MIC’s R Ganesan after BN wrested control of the government shortly after.
Call for emergency party meeting

Meanwhile, MIC strategy director S Vell Paari issued an open letter today to party’s secretary-general A Sakthivel urging him to ask Palanivel to convene an emergency central working committee (CWC) meeting.

He quoted media reports saying that an MIC member had complained to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) on May 20 that the party has failed to hold its party elections as required by the constitution, and questioned why the ROS was clamping down on DAP but dragging its feet over MIC.
The current term of the existing leadership has already exceeded the three-year limit as set by the MIC constitution.

“We should be brave and honest to admit mistakes and show we have the ability to regain the trust of the Indian community and the nation with positive and meaningful action.

NONEThe current constitutional issues should not be brushed aside. My lawyer friends tell me that these are issues may have serious consequences for the party,” he warned.

Vell Paari (left) also mentioned that he had previously asked for a CWC meeting on deaths in police custody but received no response and urged Sakthivel not to ignore this request too.

“If I do not get a reply by Monday 5pm the 10th of June, Mr Sakthivel, I hereby give you notice that I already have the one-third support of the central committee members as per the MIC constitution to call for an emergency meeting. Do not force me to use it,” he warned.
