We refer to the statements made by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) Chairperson Heliliah Mohd Yusof and also its Chief Executive Hafizah Hanom Mokhtar on 11 June 2013.
We are shocked by Heliliah as head of a supposedly independent body to go on a tirade against the Opposition instead of addressing the serious complaints on the functioning of the EAIC.
EAIC has failed to address public concern on its ineffectiveness in comparison with IPCMC. Heliliah’s conduct clearly shows that another independent body has been compromised by the Barisan Nasional Government.
The EAIC has failed to explain Datuk Salehuddin’s appearance in all the other deaths in custody and police abuse cases as defence lawyer, including his appearance for the notorious, Serdang Hospital pathologist Dr Abdul Karim Tajudin who prepared A. Kugan’s first post mortem report and the Prabakar hot water torture case.
We demand EAIC for an explanation as to the status of Datuk Salehuddin. His continued presence in the panel in whatever capacity utterly undermines EAIC’s commitment to ending custodial deaths and police abuse cases.
We also question EAIC’s deafening silence on custodial deaths and police abuse cases since its formation over two years ago. It was only subsequent to the public outrage in N.Dhamendran’s case that the EAIC chose to speak out.
Therefore we once against reiterate our call for the setting up of IPCMC.
