Putrajaya - Umno's Election Committee members will kick off a tour series starting tomorrow to explain the new procedures for the party's polls, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
Tengku Adnan, who also Federal Territories Minister, said the tour aimed to provide the needed information to all members at the grassroots level.
"Under the new system, there will be a nomination day and polling day for the top posts," he told reporters here, today.
Tengku Adnan, who s also a member of the committee, said the candidates list would under a review before their names are announced to the 150,000 members at the branch and division levels eligible to vote in the top leadership.
Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently announced that the party polls this time will follow amendments made to Umno's constitution, which empowers almost 500,000 members at the grassroots level (incluiding from the party's three wings) to determine the party leadership.
The polls will be carried out after the divisional meetings and before the party's general assembly.
A selection committee headed by former Perak Menteri Besar Tan Sri Tajol Rosli Ghazali was established to explain the new method of election based on the amendments made in 2009.
Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan said a letter had been issued to every Umno branch to hold branch elections from July 15 to Aug 30.
However, he said the division and the main body election dates had yet to be set as the leadership was still waiting for feedback from the selection committee to choose the appropriate dates. - Bernama
