Nube fires darts at Najib for EPU head choice

The National Union of Banking Employees (Nube) has hit out at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for appointing former Maybank chief executive officer Abdul Wahid Omar, as head of the economic planning unit.

"Najib has failed to acknowledge our legitimate disapproval of his appointment as minister but he went on to praise Wahid Omar's (left) talent and experience in the Malaysian financial sector," said Nube general-secretary J Solomon.

Nube had last month filed a legal suit against Abdul Wahid and two other Maybank senior officials for alleged wrongful sacking of two Nube leaders from the bank.

The duo were alleged booted out for union activities.

"Under Abdul Wahid's tenure in Maybank, an in house union was set up to break the unity among the bank union employees," he said.

Soloman (right) claimed that Abdul Wahid has a track record of "working against the middle and lower classes" which would be against Najib's wish to bridge the income gap.

"Is Najib encouraging Abdul Wahid to adopt the same managerial philosophy through the EPU?" he said.

Abdul Wahid resigned as Maybank CEO to become Minister in the Prime Minister's Department after being appointed senator.
