Nyanasegaran did not betray MIC

The former Bayan Baru division head was sacked from the party in 2008 by Samy Vellu contrary to claims he had quit
GEORGE TOWN: Former MIC Bayan Baru division head, M Nyanasegaran, did not quit or betray the party prior to the March 8, 2008 general election, said the division’s information chief.
T Poobalan said Nyanasegaran was indeed expelled from the party on Oct 8, 2008, six months after the 12th general election by then party president S Samy Vellu,
Samy Vellu had claimed that Nyanasegaran had collaborated with the opposition during the general election to justify the expulsion.
Thus, he said it was grossly wrong for current Bayan Baru chief K Sathiasilan to claim that Nyanasegaran, 58, resigned as party member prior to the election.
Poobalan, who was the division’s vice-chairman between 2006 and 2009, also lambasted Sathiasilan for claiming that Nyanasegaran, 58, had betrayed the party.
“How could Nyanasegaran have betrayed the party when he did not quit, but was sacked by Samy Vellu? Sathiasilan lied,” a furious Poobalan, 56, told FMT when commenting on an open letter written by Sathiasilan.
Sathiasilan submitted the open letter, dated May 20 this year, to party acting president G Palanivel, secretary general A Sakthivel and all central working committee members.
In the letter, as reported by FMT on June 8, Sathiasilan was alleged to have said Nyanasegaran had left the party with nine MIC branches to join PKR prior to the 2008 general election.
Sathiasilan allegedly said that Nyanasegaran was now allowed to come back into the party with 30 new branches.
Poobalan pointed out that Nyanasegaran was allowed to return to MIC once Palanivel took over from Samy Vellu as acting president in Dec 2010.
Incompetent
Poobalan said Nyanasegaran, together with eight others, were given amnesty by the party leadership and reinstated as MIC members in 2011.
He said Sathiasilan should not moan but to blame himself over Palanivel’s decision to allow Nyanasegaran to form 30 branches in Bayan Baru, which has some 9,000 Indian voters.
Poobalan rapped Sathiasilan for being incompetent and fearful to expand the division all this while and reach out the Indian community.
After Nyanasegaran’s ouster, Poobalan said 11 of the division’s 17 branches then were either defunct or became inactive when the respective chairmen and other principal leaders resigned as party members in protest.
Poobalan said that Sathiasilan then was only Kampung Seberang Paya branch chief, was appointed as acting division chief by Samy Vellu.
Since Bayan Baru was now led by Poobalan the division could not even fill up the seven positions of principal office bearers – chairman, deputy chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and information chief.
“When a division lacked appointees with only six active branches, Poobalan has constantly told Sathiasilan to form more branches to bring back Indians to MIC.
With only six branch chairmen as principal office bearers, how to have an effective and active committee?” asked Poobalan, who is Taman Pekaka branch chairman.
He said that whenever he brought up the “more branches” issue, Sathiasilan’s routine answer would be: “Why we should court trouble? We will have headache with more branches. It’s easier to control six branches.”
On the contrary, since Nyanasegaran returned to the division, said Poobalan the former division chief managed to revive 10 inactive branches and set up another 20 by November 2011.
Poobalan said Sathiasilan should now prove himself by forming his own branches, instead of putting the blame squarely on Palanivel.
“It’s unethical for Sathiasilan to blame the president. He was given all the chances to revive and expand the division but he slept on his job to safeguard his position. Now he is scared of Nyanasegaran,” said Poobalan.
