Penang Bridge collapse: I was 3 seconds away from death
Motorist R. Thilashantini, 24, and her passenger had a close shave with death when they were nearly buried by the 30m-wide ramp of the Second Penang Bridge, which collapsed in Batu Maung yesterday.
Relating the scariest moment of her life, the nurse at Penang Hospital said a steel bar from the ramp hit the left side of her car, but fortunately, it missed her passenger, G. Gajashaantini, 24, by just inches.
The left side of her Perodua Myvi was damaged.
"I was just three seconds away from the ramp when the structure collapsed.
"We saw a motorcyclist overtaking us just before the structure collapsed. I have no idea what happened to him," said Thilashantini, who was shaken by the incident.
She was making a U-turn to return home in Sungai Nibong.
The ramp collapsed at 6.45pm.
At least one car and two motorcycles were believed to be buried in the rubble.
The three-storey ramp is near the Mini Circuits Technologies factory and joins the Tun Lim Chong Eu Expressway
It collapsed while motorists were passing underneath towards Permatang Damar Laut. A large team of Fire and Rescue Department personnel was busy removing the debris, including the scaffolding that collapsed, to search for survivors.
