Proton slashes prices by 10pct, details tomorrow

Proton will tomorrow unveil its new price list, which will see car prices for existing models slashed by 10 percent, the New Straits Times reports.

Quoting Proton executive chairperson Mohd Khamil Jamil, it reported that the national carmaker has also assured that quality would not be compromised.

"We are reducing the prices based on value engineering," he was quoted as saying at the Proton Preve launch in Jakarta yesterday.

Proton cars are priced between RM38,148 (Saga FLX) and RM89,012 (Exora).

NONEThe new prices will be launched at its Mutiara Damansara outlet tomorrow and bookings will be open to the public.

The BN had, in its election manifesto, promised to bring car prices down by 30 percent in the next five years.

Whereas Pakatan Rakyat - in its manifesto - had also promised lower car prices, but through slashing excise duties instead.

'Mini Coopers 30pct cheaper'

Meanwhile, the daily also reported that the locally-assembled Mini Cooper Countryman launched yesterday retails at 30 percent less than the imported unit.

The first completely knocked-down (CKD) variant for the Mini range in South-East Asia, the Countryman model and Countryman ALI4 model retails at RM218,888 and RM258,888 respectively.

NONEYesterday, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (leftslammedUmno-owned daily Utusan Malaysiafor misreporting that Peugeot and Volkswagen had lowered their prices in accordance with the government's policy.

Both carmakers have since refuted this report.

In its business section today,Utusan reported that car prices can come down without slashing excise duties, especially for cars with 1.5 litre engine capacity which are the most popularly driven.

It reported that this is because excise duties in Malaysia are about the same as in Thailand, but retail prices for below 1.5 litre engine cars at the neighbouring country are about RM17,000 cheaper.

Utusan also reported that in other instances, some models are cheaper in Malaysia due to the rollout of new models.

Quoting industry sources, it also reported that excise and import duties have been cut by a collective 20-30 percent starting 2006 through the National Automotive Policy, but this only resulted in a drop in retail prices of an average five percent.
