Tracker dogs to sniff out more victims

Though there are no more missing persons reports, police are concerned that there may be foreigners or tourists who had not informed families that they were in Penang.
GEORGE TOWN: After extricating the body of a retired policeman, tracker dogs are being deployed since at the second Penang Bridge-link flyover ramp collapse site to sniff out more possible victims.
Four tracker dogs from the K9 unit from Kuala Lumpur have been deployed, with two each to search for live and dead victims.
The rubble is being cleared in stages while the dogs are being let in at intervals.
“If there’s any indication, they will bark,” said state deputy police chief Abdul Rahim Jaafar.
Tajudin Zainal Abidin’s body was pulled out from a crushed Perodua Kelisa on Friday,  four hours after the extricatiion work began at 4.30pm.
Zainal’s body was the only one found after a nearly 24-hour search and rescue operation since the tragedy occurred at 7.20pm on Thursday.
A badly damaged Land Rover was also extricated from the rubble early Saturday, just after midnight.
Three people were also confirmed injured when the 30-metre wide flyover ramp structure collapsed on Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in Batu Maung.
Two of them were an Indonesian worker identified only as Slamat, 36, and an a Myanmar national, Tin Maung Iwin, 39.
They were sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment and are in stable condition.
MPPP criticised
The third person was a local woman, Thilasheni Rajendran, 24, who was injured by flying debris while driving through the affected area.
Her car’s side window was shattered by a fallen beam.
The collapsed portion was part of Package 3A of the Second Penang Bridge project undertaken by Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd, a Kuala Lumpur-based construction company.
The Pakatan Rakyat state government awarded the contract, worth RM158 million, to Cergas Murni in early 2010 to carry out the construction of island link structures to the bridge.
Since the incident, the island municipality, the MPPP, had issued a stop work order on bridge construction.
However, the MPPP criticised for not carrying out regular checks on the safety of the area and diverting traffic during construction.
Although there was no more missing person reports lodged, police are concerned that some victims could be foreigners or tourists as their families would not have known that they were in Penang.
