The ceiling price for chicken may not be below RM7 per kg during the Hari Raya season as the government wants a win-win situation for all stakeholders, buyers and sellers alike.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said this while also saying that the ceiling price will be announced today to help control the cost of poultry.
The Star reported Ahmad Bashah as saying the Ministry would reveal the full details after a meeting with distributors and other stakeholders today.
He was replying to a question by Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar on why authorities were delaying the implementation of the ceiling price for chicken.
The price of poultry has continued to rise in the market especially with the festive season just around the corner.
The rise in the price has been attributed to a searing heat wave in the region which affected chicken feed and caused the fowl to lose weight.
Extra consumer demand during the school holidays in June also pushed the price of poultry up.
The price of chicken per kg has soared to between RM8.50 and RM9 recently.
