Jalan Alor not for Chinese only, mayor tells Malay NGO

The Jalan Alor development plan in Bukit Bintang is not being carried out for Chinese Malaysians only, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib said today.

NONE"It should be stated that the allegation that Kuala Lumpur City Hall gives priority to hawkers of Chinese ethnicity only is not true," Ahmad Phesal (left) said.
"This is because the main objective of this upgrading and beautification programme is to protect Kuala Lumpur's image in line with the Visit Malaysia Year 2014."
He added that the plan for Jalan Alor involved the existing hawkers of various races, comprising 56 Chinese, nine Malays and two Indians.
He was responding to Pertubuhan Ikatan Usahawan Kecil dan Sederhana’s (Ikhlas) call for the development there to be stoppedbecause it is located within the DAP-controlled Bukit Bintang parliamentary constituency.

Ahmad Phesal told reporters at his office today that the RM12 million development project was not done based on political considerations.

“I don’t want to speak based on politics. If I talk like that, only a few areas (in Kuala Lumpur) can be developed.

“If I take on that approach, it will cause a situation that is not right in Kuala Lumpur’s development and planning,” he said at the press conference this evening.

To a question, Ahmad Phesal said he was prepared to consider meeting Ikhlas, but on the condition that the hawkers association came with constructive ideas for all.

“I don’t have a problem (with that) but if (they) come without suggestions, we can’t do that,” he said.

Earlier, he announced that DBKL would work together with seven developers for the Pantai reservoir project that was originally to be built at Bukit Maxwell.
