After a year’s inaction, the Klang traffic police have only just begun investigating a fatal hit-and-run case - and only because of a complaint to the police chief, claimed Jingga 13.
The NGO said Tan May Teng’s family have been waiting for the outcome of the investigations since the accident on Sept 3 last year at Jalan Persiaran Tengku Ampuan Rahiman, Klang.
Even letters written by the family’s lawyers were not answered, it claimed in a statement.
Last Thursday, Jingga 13 submitted a memorandum to Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar (left).“Jingga 13 is very disappointed that the police have only just started investigations. They have taken Tan’s husband and mother to the scene (of the accident) where they took photos and measurements. They also recorded statements from Tan’s husband,” the NGO said.
“This means (no investigation was conducted all along) although three police reports had been lodged. Another police report was made by an individual 17 hours after the accident, on ramming an object that damaged his 4x4 vehicle.”
It said the case should have been investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act (which deals with reckless driving) and charges should have been pressed for the sake of justice for Tan.
“This was clearly not done professionally or integrity, and proves that the police are lackadaisical, hence affecting the police’s credibility in the eyes of the rakyat,” it added.
