Liow: Chua read me wrong

MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai has denied claims that he had pressured party boss Dr Chua Soi Lek to step down before the party elections in December.

In a press release today, Liow said there had been several private conversations between him and Chua on many issues and urging him to step down before his term expired was not one of them.

"I am shocked that Chua misinterpreted my earnest participation and it has so heavily burdened and disturbed him over the last few months," he said.

Yesterday, Sin Chew Daily quoted Chua claiming that Liow had on three occasions, verbally put pressure on the former to step down.

According to the MCA constitution, should a president step down, the deputy is automatically promoted to fill the void. Chua said that Liow was hoping this scenario will happen.

However, Liow retorted that Chua had launched an early strike against him to paint him as "impatient" and "power hungry" and was a desperate attempt to divert attention.

"Many questions are arising from the grassroot level regarding a number of issues namely Tee Siew Kiong's reinstatement against the disciplinary committee's decision and the revived troubles atMatang Holdings Bhd.

"These are the issues we should be addressing," said Liow.
