Kulim Bandar Baru member Raihan Suleiman is surprised but unperturbed by Pengerang MP Azalina Othman's decision to withdraw from contesting Umno Wanita's top post.
KUALA LUMPUR: Kulim-Bandar Baru Umno committee member Raihan Suleiman Palestin will take on incumbent Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in the contest for the Wanita Umno chief post.
Announcing her intention in her Facebook post, Raihan also expressed surprise at Pengerrang MP Azalina Othman Said’s decision to withdraw from challenging Sharizat.
Raihan, 47 said her main intention was to strengthen the Wanita Umno in line with the party’s agenda.
“Maybe I’m not a popular candidate, I know that, but that’s not a big deal because I believe the delegates are wise enough to decide who is more qualified (to lead Wanita Umno).
“Popular or not is not the main issue, the delegates will vote based on their own judgement and observation on the quality of the candidate,” she said.
Although surprised at Azalina’s decision, Raihan said she would stand fim with her bid to challenge Sharizat.
“I have to rise to the challenge to continue the great legacy of Wanita Umno.
“I don’t do this for fun, I do this with all my heart and soul,” she said.
Azalina had recently withdrew her candidacy for the Wanita Umno chief post and said that she would defend her Supreme Council seat instead.
Registration for the nomination of candidates to contest top positions in the Wanita, Youth and Puteri Umno wings will be on Sept 21, while the elections for the three wings is fixed Oct 12.
