No more water for Bunga Raya villagers

Syabas issues a notice saying the supply will be terminated within a fortnight.
PETALING JAYA: With their housing woes yet to be resolved, residents of Kampung Bunga Raya have been dealt another blow. They now face the prospect of permanently losing their water supply.
Last Friday, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) notified them it would terminate their supply in two weeks’ time.
Village head K Ramachandran said the notice was addressed to land owner Sinar Fadzilat Sdn Bhd.
“On top of eviction threats, we are now also on the verge of being deprived of water,” he added.
The 118 settlers in Kampung Bunga Raya were moved there by Sinar Fadzilat in 1994. They claim that the company promised to build low-cost houses for them in an area close by.
However, the project has not taken off. Some of the villagers have settled their housing loans, but the rest have defaulted.
Since last week’s FMT report about the villagers’ plight, the Selangor exco for poverty eradication and estate development, V Ganabatirau, has promised to look into the matter.
Ramachandran said it was unfair to penalise the villagers for Sinar Fadzilat’s mistake.
“The land belongs to Sinar Fadzilat and the water and the electricity bills are issued to the developer, not us,” he said. “Sinar Fadzilat should pay up.”
