The Home Ministry’s continued silence over the actual reasons behind its suspension of news weekly The Heat has drawn scorn from Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm).
Referring to the Home Ministry’s press statement yesterday, the Geramm secretariat said the government was using technicalities to justify the suspension of The Heat, which would only fuel speculations as to the actual reasons.
“The suspension of The Heat, masked behind such technical reasons, clearly shows that the government has no strong evidence to take such actions.
“In fact, the reasons given merely strengthen public perception that the news weekly was suspended due to its report on lavish spendings of the prime minister and his wife,” Geramm said in a statement issued today.
Yesterday, the ministry said The Heat’s publishing permit was beingsuspended temporarily pending its study of the weekly’s reply to a show-cause letter.
The ministry also claimed that "certain parties" were trying to use the suspension to tarnish the image of the federal government.
Journalists to protest on Jan 4
In response to this, Geramm said it represents journalists who appreciate press freedom and have no intention to defame the government.
It the eight demands it made last Friday are fair and should be given consideration by the authorities for the betterment of the country.
Geramm also announced that its demonstration against the suspension of The Heat would be held at 2pm this Saturday (Jan 4), in front of the Bar Council headquarters on Lebuh Pasar Besar in Kuala Lumpur.
Geramm also urged members of the public to attend its ‘Red Pencil Protest’ to support the group’s eight demands.
“Geramm also requests the cooperation of the police and authorities to assist with the demonstration in order for it to be held in a peaceful manner,” it added in the statement.
