MCA: Hudud never was BN's consensus too

MCA Youth Chong Sin Woon today declared that BN too has no consensus on hudud law and the ruling coalition should stop raising the issue like PAS is doing.

Chong's remarks comes after DAP's Seremban MP Anthony Loke's suggested PAS quit Pakatan Rakyat if it want to break the coalition's consensus and pursue implementation of hudud law in Kelantan.

Chong described Loke's call as "the right and honourable thing to do" and urged other Pakatan leaders in PKR and DAP to take a similar stance.

"In the same vein, the MCA Youth would like to put on record that it was not, it is not, and it will never be, the consensus of the BN coalition to implement hudud.

"This consensus (against hudud law) was reached by the core BN component parties - Umno, MCA and MIC - during the foundation years of Malaysia under the leadership of Tunku Abdul Rahman, as demonstrated through the Alliance Memorandum submitted to the Reid Commission in 1956.

"This remains the consensus, the spirit and the principle that the BN will uphold," he said in a statement today.

Chong urged leaders from both political divide to abandon any ambitions for hudud law.

'BN and Pakatan should drop hudud'

"Both BN and Pakatan Rakyat should stop raising the issue of hudud and put this issue to sleep once and for all.

"We are of the view that there are more pertinent issues that require the attention of the political leaders in this country, that require the political will and efforts of us as movers and shakers of the political landscape to resolve, than hudud," he said.

An example, he said, is the issue of water shortage and flash floods in Selangor that truly affect people's lives and need immediate attention.

PAS has declared its intention to table a Private Member's Bill at the next parliamentary sitting to remove hurdles at the federal level for the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan.

The state passed its hudud enactment in 1993, but was unable to implement it because of objections from the federal government.

PAS Kelantan' latest move to rekindle the Islamic penal law has prompted battlelines to be drawn as MPs declared their stance on the matter.

While non-Muslim BN component parties have been vehement in their objections, Umno has kept its distance and has been cautious to avoid being seen to be opposing Islamic laws.

Yesterday, Umno president Najib Abdul Razak reportedly declared that the party was not against hudud law, but stressed there were several hurdles that first needed to be scrutinised.
